The RDF central committee's newly elected president Varavara Rao and secretary Raj Kishore alleged that the state wing of RDF has not physically taken its shape except only two members as its president and secretary. Varavara Rao said the state wing was formed three months ago and that it has organised only two press conferences and one round table meeting on the Basaguda encounter in Chattisgarh, in which 20 innocent tribals were killed by the CRPF, and released two booklets so far.

The government, without application of its mind, has notified the yet-to-be-formed State unit of Revolutionary Democratic Front (RDF) as a banned organisation, president of the front Varavara Rao said and demanded immediate withdrawal of the notification.
Letter from DGP
The seven-year-old RDF is a democratic organisation and has been active across India. In fact, it was allowed to stage a protest on the Parliament Street in New Delhi on July 31 and even submit a memorandum to the President, he told media here on Saturday.

On 2nd May, 2012, it was 5 O’clock in the evening. We entered into the general ward of Orthopedics Department of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi. After a long search, we found 40 year-old Sylvester Minj, lying on the bed. His son Roshan was sitting on the other side of the bed and eying on his father with hopeless sight. Another care taker, Sylvester’s cousin brother M. Minj was sleeping on the ground near his bed.

Raipur, June 30: Chhattisgarh police today admitted that the 18 victims of yesterday’s anti-Maoist operation included children and women but sparked fresh controversy by claiming they were all rebel cadres.
The admission came after the bodies were laid out in front of a police station to facilitate identification — a routine procedure — and journalists took photographs. It was clear that several of the victims were children and at least one seemed a girl.

Chasi Mulia Sangha (CMAS) is going to hold a meting at Narayanpatna. All the tribal communities will be attending the meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to save the tribal language, culture and territory. Also, the objective is to provide education up to the 8th class in tribal language. In this context, two tribal students Landa Tadingi and Chakra Tadingi along with Suka linga, the younger brother of Nachika Linga, came to Berhampur to contact guests and for preparing the leaflets for the meeting. While they were returning, they were arrested by Berhampur Police at the Berhampur railway station on 17th February 2012.

On Saturday, over 40 hours after the “biggest encounter” involving security forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh, bodies of 19 alleged “hardcore Maoists and Jan Militia members” lay outside their huts in the three villages of Sarkeguda, Kottaguda and Rajpenta in Bijapur.
Villagers alleged no government official had spoken to them or visited their homes, and no autopsies had been carried out on the bodies.

India's record on custodial torture dismal

NEW DELHI: The Torture Convention was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations on 10 December 1984 (resolution 39/46) and it came into force on 26 June 1987 after being ratified by 20 nations. The Torture Convention completed 25 years of its presence earlier this week and it's an opportune moment for India to introspect on its dismal track record of custodial torture.
According to a recent report on human rights in India, a study of 47 districts over a period of more than two years shows that on an average 1.8 million people are victims of police torture and violence in India every year. The release of the report, prepared by the Working Group on Human Rights in India and the UN (WGHR), a coalition of human rights bodies, coincided with India's Universal Periodic Review on human rights at the United Nations.
